Some people take medication for six months to a year, build skills in therapy, and taper with guidance. Some find it helpful enough to continue longer, much like wearing glasses instead of squinting.

The decision to continue or stop is always yours. We explain what research suggests for your situation, including when stopping may be reasonable and when it carries more risk.

If you decide to stop, gradual tapering is usually safer than stopping suddenly. Ask for a plan before changing a psychiatric medicine.

Some Ayurvedic preparations can be used alongside psychiatric medication. Some can interact. Many formulations do not list every active ingredient, and some include metals or herbs that may affect psychiatric medicines.

The wrong medicine may have been prescribed without a proper evaluation. The dose may have been too high too fast. Side effects may have been dismissed instead of addressed.

The person may not have been told what to expect, or follow-up and adjustment may have been missing. The medicine itself can also be the wrong choice for that person.

Alcohol can reduce the benefit of antidepressants, worsen mood or anxiety over time, and increase sedation with some medicines.

Some antidepressants, especially SSRIs, can reduce desire, delay arousal, or make orgasm harder. This can affect people of any gender and is a common reason for stopping medication without telling a doctor.
