That means childhood as well as now, school reports and family memories where they exist, and the effort you have spent appearing at ease.
  • It also considers what else can look similar: anxiety, attention difficulties, trauma and social anxiety, which often sit alongside rather than instead. The aim is an accurate map of how your mind works, not a list of things to correct.

The assessment is up to two 50-minute sessions. Your psychiatrist asks about now and about childhood: early language, play, friendships, school, sensory experience, and how change was handled.

Account for masking

Many adults, and disproportionately women, have learned to mask so well that a room-based impression misleads. The assessment asks what social situations cost afterwards.

There is no medication for autism itself.

Anything discussed is for something accompanying it, and the reasoning and the limits are explained as they would be anywhere else.

If it points somewhere else

You are told plainly, and pointed toward the right door.

An assessment that concludes something else is a successful assessment, not a wasted appointment.

Said plainly, because it matters more than a booking: a formal diagnosis is not always necessary in order to be helped. Understanding your profile and changing what surrounds you are useful places to start.

That work can begin whether or not a diagnosis is ever recorded. Where one is needed for workplace or educational accommodations, that is a good reason to pursue it, and it is worth being clear which of the two you are seeking.
