WHEN ONE DRINK STOPS FEELING LIKE A CHOICE
'He planned one. By the third, stopping felt harder than starting.'
This is a health problem, not bad character. Care can help the body and habits.
MORE OR LONGER THAN PLANNED. URGES, CUTTING DOWN DOES NOT STICK. WORK, MONEY, HEALTH AND RELATIONSHIPS SUFFER. UNWELL WHEN DELAYED OR REDUCED.
Cue or difficult feeling, then urge and drinking, then brief relief and cost, then the next cue is stronger.
TELL: Amount and time of last drink. MENTION: Past shaking, sweating, vomiting, confusion, seeing or hearing things, or fits. BRING: One trusted person to reach care safely.
FAMILY: Stay calm. Help them reach care. Protect children and vulnerable people. Never shame, threaten, secretly remove alcohol or force a sudden stop.
WITHDRAWAL CAN BE DANGEROUS: Severe shaking or extreme agitation; hallucinations or confusion; seizure or collapse. Call 112 or go to emergency care now. If the person drinks regularly or has had withdrawal before, do not stop suddenly or try a home taper. Get a same-day medical assessment before changing the amount. 24-hour support: Tele-MANAS 14416 or 1800-89-14416.
